Bedah Kawasan Kampung Gembira Gembrong 2022 is a residential revitalization project in East Jakarta designed to rebuild a safer, healthier, and more sustainable environment after a fire disaster. The project is a collaboration between YPA Architecture Studio and Badan Amil Zakat Nasional (BAZNAS), which aims to create a more suitable living environment for the community with a community-based design approach.

The main concepts applied in this project include resilient architecture, where building structures are designed to be more resilient to potential disasters, as well as inclusive spatial planning, which allows for social interaction spaces, better public facilities, and comfortable pedestrian paths. In addition, the principle of sustainability is also applied through the use of environmentally friendly materials and designs that support energy efficiency.

Through a participatory and human-centered design approach, the project actively involves residents in planning, so that the resulting design can truly reflect the needs and aspirations of the local community. With green open spaces, social facilities, and areas that support local economic activities, the Gembira Gembrong Village Area Improvement is expected to not only provide a better environment physically, but also improve the social and economic welfare of its residents.

This project is a clear example of how architecture can play a role in rebuilding people’s lives after a disaster, and how the synergy between architects, government, and social institutions such as BAZNAS can create a sustainable positive impact.
